Breckenridge

Originally founded as a mining community at the height of the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859, Breckenridge currently serves as a favorite summer and winter leisure spot for thrill seekers and history buffs.

Rising at 9,600 feet (2,926 meters) above sea level and covering an area of 4.5 square miles (12 square kilometers), this friendly town hosts a number of exciting activities and breathtaking sceneries throughout the year. Excellent ski resorts operate in winter, with some outfits even offering facilities for snowshoeing, dog sledding, and snowmobile tours.

Once the white snow melts into the lushest of greens in summer, Breckenridge becomes a hotspot for nature adventurers. Included in the list of offered activities are biking, fly fishing, 4-wheel driving, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, orienteering, and golf. All of these and more make this Colorado city a popular destination luxury vacations among nature enthusiasts.

The Fifty-Niners who built the historic town left their mark on both the landscape and the town’s architecture. Country Boy Mine, which has served as a top source of gold as well as a major supplier of lead and zinc during World War II, is just one of the restored mines in the area that offers tours and gold panning activities for the entire family. Downtown Breckenridge maintains 171 historical buildings that range from log cabins to Victorian lodges. Even the goods sold on the main street channel the frontier experience. Here, the brick storefronts house an assortment of microbrews, boutiques and galleries, and T-shirt shops. You can even stay in one of the luxury cabins at the heart of the city for added convenience.

Of course, a day spent exploring the outdoors is best closed with a hearty meal. Breckenridge restaurants feature many meat-centered dishes. You can also check out the luxury spa resorts in the area for a great selection of relaxing massage treatments.
