One of California’s most popular beachfront districts, Venice Beach in Los Angeles is a place where you can encounter people from all walks of life. With its host of street performers, bulky body builders, street ballers, skaters, swimmers, and other visitors, this beach is a fantastic destination for people-watching. The beach area is a popular sporting venue as well, offering facilities for various sports like basketball, paddle tennis, handball, and volleyball.
Visitors can venture inland for a view of the neighborhood’s scenic canals and the architecturally eclectic mix of homes lined up alongside them. Schedule your holiday in the month of May, during which the Venice Garden & Home Tour takes place and you can go on a self-guided exploration of these lovely and creative addresses. In the same month, the Abbot Kinney district — a great destination for shoppers, artists, and foodies alike — holds the Venice Annual Art Walk. And the Venice Beach Carnevale, which happens every first week of June features outdoor musicals, performances, and an abundance of gastronomic treats. On the other hand, if you’re visiting in December, make sure not to miss the Venice Canal Holiday Boat Parade, when the residents engage in a gondola parade and a canal bridge decorating contest.
Venice Beach’s famous canals were developed by Abbott Kinney in the early 20th century. A well-heeled conservationist and businessman, Kinney was inspired to build a local version of Venice, Italy, and the Italian Riviera when he visited these places in his youth. Venice Beach became operational in 1905. By 1929, the canals had fallen out of the citizens’ favor and most were filled to create roads. After the renovation of the remaining canals in 1992, the district once again became a highly sought after residential area.
