Jackson Hole

Nestled in a valley between the Snake River and the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountain Ranges, Jackson Hole promises visitors a nostalgic plunge into the center of the Western United States.

In the early 19th century, mountain men and pioneer explorers began descending into the valley from the steep foothills of the north and the east. The sheer magnitude of the slopes emulated the sensation of descending into a hole, hence the origins of the location’s eventual name. “Jackson,” on the other hand, comes is derived from namesake of the nearby valley town, which in turn was named after David Edward “Davey” Jackson, a man who used to trap beavers in the area in the 1820s.

Since then, the beautiful expanse of land has seen the arrival of homesteaders, ranchers, and cowboys. Nowadays, the area attracts skiers, wildlife and nature enthusiasts, photographers, and many other visitors who all want to catch a glimpse of the location’s majectic beauty.

The Grand Teton Mountain Resort is a perennial favorite of experienced skiers, who revel in its powdery snow and steep slopes during winter. On the other hand, those looking for more tender slopes opt for the Grand Targhee Resort.

Another world-famous attraction of Jackson Hole is the Grand Teton National Park. Once an estate of New York business magnate John D. Rockefeller, it is now one of the area’s primary draws. Its aspen forests and the magnificent views of Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake serve as beautiful backdrops for activities like trekking, hiking, and wildlife watching. Animals like moose, grizzly bears, cougars, bald eagles, and elk are just a few of the remarkable fauna found in the area. In December, a herd of thousands of elk dominate the National Elk Refuge, filling the air with a cacophony of their calls.

When in Jackson Hole, make sure to try out the local delicacies as well. Western food, local fish and game, and chuckwagon meals are the name of the game for first-time visitors.
